Defence lawyers, journalists and human rights activists all see this criminal case against Geriyev as trumped up from beginning to end in retaliation for his critical reporting, about which the GDF has repeatedly written in its digests (see digest 769-770 , www.gdf.ru . The convicted journalist and his defence lawyer have described the court sentence as "legalized arbitrariness", "a result of legal outrage", and "judicial terrorism". As we have reported, Jalaudi Geriyev - both in the first-instance court and later in the Supreme Court - fully overturned the investigators' version by presenting convincing evidence of his having been abducted and subjected to torture. The Memorial Human Rights Centre has designated the journalist as a political prisoner. "As established with full verity, the presiding judge, going beyond the framework of a fair trial, repeatedly contacted the Investigative Department head," defence lawyer Alaudi Musayev stated. "We thrice informed the court about crimes committed by that department's officials, and each time we received refusals to start criminal proceedings [against those guilty of] abducting and torturing Geriyev". Passions are still flying high in connection with that scandal: the presiding judge is known to have requested that the Bar Association start disciplinary proceedings against defence lawyer Musayev, while the latter, relying on the support of a group of fellow barristers, is determined to continue insisting - this time in the European Court of Human Rights - that Geriyev is not guilty. Threats against reporter from Chechen Republic's parliament speakerBy Olga Vassilyeva, GDF correspondent in Norch Caucasian District Caucasian Knot lawyers are busy checking whether or not an Instagram social network post by Chechen Parliament Speaker Magomed Daudov can be seen as an instance of interference with a journalist's lawful professional work falling under Criminal Code Article 144, Grigory Shvedov, the news agency's chief editor, has told journalists. "Though the post does not mention my full name, it is written in a way leaving the reader no doubt as to who it is all about," Shvedov said. "We accept criticism normally: whenever it appears, we cross-check our information sources. But this, I guess, is for the first time ever that we face calls for violence instead of professional criticism of our specific publications". The web news agency headed by Shvedov is one of those media which regularly highlight human rights violations in the North Caucasus. Naturally, this kind of reporting is a real nuisance to the evildoers. Asked whether or not he would turn for help to the Union of Journalists, the chief editor said it was up to investigators and prosecutors, rather than members of the media community, to handle this issue. "Besides, as the story of Chechen journalist Jalaudi Geriyev has shown, journalistic solidarity alone is clearly insufficient," he added.
